Bring a touch of nature indoors over the festive season.
At this time of year the main greenhouse is full of ‘indoor tolerant’ decorative plants and bulbs.
Not technically houseplants, but bulbs and plants which have scent or winter interest and will tolerate our heated homes for a few weeks over the festive season.
We have a wide selection of stylish planted containers to suit all tastes and pockets.
Ready planted spring bulbs, which will flower much earlier than the ones in your garden, and plants such as Helleborus ‘Christmas Carol’ make great decorations, centrepieces or gifts over the festive season.
Cyclamen, planted amaryllis, hyacinths and narcissus are available in increasing varieties each year.
Once these plants and bulbs have flowered, they can all be transferred into your beds and borders to flower year after year.
In addition to these, there are many houseplants which thrive at this time of year and bring a riot of colour to the winter home.
Poinsettias are of course the iconic festive houseplant, but don’t forget about the Christmas Cactus (pictured above left) which is available in an array of eye-catching hues. These plants love indirect light and require minimal watering. A Brazilian succulent which can flower through to February and is an extremely long lived plant, covered in a mass of flowers over the festive season year after year.
The Kalanchoe plant (above right) bears stems of densely packed small flowers in shades of pink, white, red and orange. Low maintenance with glossy thick leaves, Kalanchoes also like bright indirect light.
Orchids are another winter winner (they will flower throughout the year), and we currently have some in beautiful rich plum shades which look great when combined with a traditional festive colour scheme.
Indoor Azaleas are also a popular choice. These bushy plants are cultivated Rhododendrons and are encouraged (sounds so much better than forced) to flower over the festive season. They love a cool, bright spot such as a sunny windowsill (although NOT over a radiator please)!
We’ve also added a festive touch (think glitter, fake snow…) to many of our foliage houseplants to give you some Christmas decorating and gifting inspiration.
